Performing rights – Performing rights refer to the legal rights granted to songwriters, composers, and music publishers to either authorise or prohibit the public performance of their musical works. These rights help ensure that creators are compensated when their music is performed publicly. A public performance can include radio plays, live concerts, playing music at public spaces like shopping malls, restaurants etc.
Performing rights are typically managed by performing rights organisations (PRO) or collective management organisations (CMO). These organisations issue licences, collect public performance royalties every time a song is played, a pay out the royalties to the rights holders.
