Interpolation

Interpolation – Interpolation refers to the recreation of an already existing copyrighted melody without using the original recording (phonogram). This differs from sampling since a sample uses both the original recording and the composition (melody and lyrics). Hence, clearing interpolations requires permission from the owners of the underlying composition (publishing rights), typically owned by the songwriter or music publisher.
